I LOVE GOING TO CONCERTS

i love concerts and I’m lucky I get to go to them all the time. Friend’s bands, big bands, small bands, bad bands, good bands, solo acts, orchestras, whatever. concerts rule and music is god. here is a short history of my concert going career.

The first “real” rock concert I got to go to was Creed / Collective Soul at the Alamodome in 2000. that opened the concert floodgates. Nü Metal was taking over the airwaves and San Antone was hungry for it. so I went to lots of Nü Metal shows where the groove was heavy and the fans were on meth and beer and weed and moshing a lot. Static X / Soulfly at the Live Oak Civic center comes to mind as a very eye opening event for this kind of culture. ha!

There were lots of shows at the then new Verizon Wireless Amphitheater just outside of San Antone that i went to with my parents and my friends. ZZ Top, Rush, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Scorpions, Deep Purple, Ozzfest (where I passed out from heat exhaustion), Warped Tour, and MORE. There was a 99.5 KISS event there called the Fire and the Fury that was headlined by Rammstein and Staind and I remember begging to go to that one. My first Rammstein show!!!!

I started making it up to Austin for shows too. The White Stripes at Stubbs in June 2003. it was an early show and extremely hot outside. During SXSW one year, my mom drove me and some friends up to see my camp counselor Mike Frazier’s band Transmography play some shot bar on 6th street. we weren’t of age so we watched from the sidewalk. it ruled.

I also got to see Andrew WK at the Mercury Lounge in Austin on a Wednesday night (school night!). I got on stage and partied. an all time big mega influential night.

On my 16th birthday I got to see Parliament Funkadelic at Sunset Station. they jammed and Diaper Man was shredding. I also saw GWAR there twice and got to get up in all the blood spew. I still have the stained white tshirts I wore there. I had an allergic reaction to the goo too! hell yeh

The first show I ever “worked” was in 2006. Fantomas / the Locust / Trevor Dunn at the Sanctuary. my friends and I got paid in pizza to help load equipment. I convinced Mike Patton to sign my deflated 1998 final four basketball. he said something like “are you some basketball freak?!” then signed it.

Anyways, I went to a ton of awesome show this year and I always make a year end list of favorites starting with shows at the Lonesome Rose, the bar that I own in San Antone foo.
