As I have written on here before, concerts have always mystified me. And ever since I started playing music live, I have been putting concerts together. This really started happening when I moved back to San Antonio around 2012. That’s when I hit the scene with a dream of a solo career and ALSO to bring bands to town that have never played here.
A few club shows that I spearheaded in the early days of my “promoter” career included Dead Meadow, the Drive-by Truckers, Nik Turner from Hawkwind, GZA, Kool Keith, and Del The Funky Homosapien. All had either never played SA before or only had kinda bad experiences when they did. these shows were full of zany learning experiences for me.
As I started getting more involved with the indie country scene in Tejas, I teamed up with my friend Daniel to start trying to make legendary San Antonio stuff happen. Kinky Friedman / Santiago Jimenez Jr. and I all playing at a furniture store one Sunday afternoon comes to mind. so epic.
The In the Shadows (Again) album release party on Cinco de Mayo 2018 was the beginning of a really cool era. We basically got the remaining members of the Texas Tornadoes to come hang out and jam. The Jimenez Bros (Flaco and Santiago) performed together for the first time in a while. The Shut Ups drummer climbed to the top of the building and hung upside down puking. Lotsa people showed up and partied. A good energy was in the air.
Around this time, talks of the Lonesome Rose were beginning to happen and I ended up joining forces with some really cool people in town to get it going, working to fill a void for alternative country music in SA that had somehow been lost over time. There have been countless “holy shit” moments since then. Many legends and awesome bands have graced the Rose stage. These days we are not only known as the spot for alternative country music in SA, but music of all genres. and just a solid and diverse Tejas hang. People all over mention the Lonesome Rose to me when I’m on tour!
All of this brings me joy and I consider myself lucky to have found some way to help foster a scene and tie it in with my career as an artist. but I have found it important to check in and remind myself that creating art and music are my spiritual numero uno! and balance is key!
music is magic. music is god. music is my religion. foo. here are some tour dates. come hang in Austin this week for sx whatever it’s called and also the “Everyone is Everyone” party that I put together!

Dear Garrett you are very special, you are the ocean and the sky.
Hey GTC. I enjoyed this write up. Although I do not play an instrument, I believe we have a lot in common when it comes to live music. I’ve met you before when you “couldnt’t find Wayne!” It’s been a few years ago, but I reached out to you asking how to get into the business. I had sent you a resume. My dream was to do what you’re doing with the Rose. I love that place. Anyway, I’ve really come to enjoy your music. I really dig it! I appreciate what you bring to SA! Be safe amigo!!
